Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau School Board President Brian Holst offered his reaction on Action Line to the superior court decision upholding the Legislature's action to provide forward funding of education.
"Forward funding has been something that school districts have sought and we were happy to see the Legislature do that. It just eliminates an unnecessary level of uncertainty and independent of how much money you get, knowing in advance what resources you have to work with allows us to plan."
In the past districts have been forced to send out layoff notices to teachers and staff when the level of state spending has not been determined in time. "It's no way to operate. It's disrespectful to the whole teaching profession," Holst said.
The Dunleavy Administration says it will appeal the ruling. Holst was asked how confident that this decision will be upheld on appeal. "I'm not a lawyer, but I trust this has been a precedent. Forward funding has happened throughout the history here in Alaska for education on many occasions. So it hasn't been questioned in previous years. I'm hoping that the courts will maintain their position."
