Juneau Police to seek ways to recruit and retain officers

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Police Chief Ed Mercer talked about a key recommendation made by the Mayor's Task Force on Public Safety while a guest on Action Line Wednesday.

That recommendation deals with the recruitment and retention of police officers.  "That's one thing that is near and dear to me in my capacity currently is maintaining a police force that can go out and serve the public."

The task force recommendation calls for the department to work with the Human Resources Department to come up with ideas on ways to recruit retain officers which the chief says has been an ongoing challenge for the department.

Right now the department has eight vacant officer positions.  In addition, four new hires are still in training status.
