Housing First opening has reduced the number of hospital emergency room visits

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Visits to Bartlett Regional Hospital's emergency room are down from the record established in Fiscal Year 17 that ended June 30th.

The hospital logged 16,400 visits then.

Hospital CEO Chuck Bill was asked about activity so far in Fiscal Year 18 while a guest on Action Line Monday.  "Part of what we're seeing which is exciting is the impact of the Housing First development.  It has really helped reduce the number of visits from that population to the ER and to our sleep off facility."

He explained that sometimes they have had people who visit the emergency room 250 times a year.  He said that number is really reduced now.  So he expects the number of visits in Fiscal Year 18 to be down.
