Juneau, AK (KINY) - Heavy rainfall is causing flooding throughout the borough and the National Weather Service have issued a Flood Warning that will continue into Friday morning.
Areas that are affected include land around the Mendenhall Lake and River in the Central Inner Channels of Southeast Alaska. Weather officials noted that measurements taken at Mendenhall Lake that showed water above the flood stage. Impacts include up to 3 feet of water at the Mendenhall Campground, which would cover the low areas. Skaters Cabin Road will also likely be covered with 1.5 feet of water. Portions of the West Glacier Trail will be too dangerous to use. Flooding will also occur some of the yards of homeowners along View Drive.
Eyes are on the Suicide Basin, which could add additional water to the situation. The last time it spilled over, the CBJ Emergency Management team noted that had a rain event been coupled with that overflow, it could have made the flooding much worse.
