Fish Board nominee to change

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Duncan Fields withdrew his name from consideration for appointment to the Alaska Board of Fisheries after criticism from sport fishing groups.

The move opens up the reappointment of Alan Cain to the Board.  He is a retired Alaska Wildlife Trooper from Anchorage.  Various sport fishing groups had criticized Gov. Bill Walker's appointment of Fields because it would have broken an unwritten rule about the balance of power on the board between commercial and sports fishing interests.

Fields, from Kodiak, has worked in commercial fishing and fisheries policy.

Gov. Walker's office said Mr. Cain had planned to leave the board when his term ended this summer but changed his mind.  The nomination must be approved by the State Legislature.
