Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - There was exciting news from the Juneau Downtown Business Association on Action Line today (Friday) regarding its effort to become an accredited Main Street America downtown.
DBA President Jill Ramiel and Dana Herndon, the Juneau Economic Development Council's liaison to DBA were on the program. Ramiel said, "We are very close to becoming Alaska's first accredited city.." Herndon added, "It kind of opens us up to more funding opportunities and grants and I think just makes us more credible."
Main Street America's next national convention is scheduled for March in Seattle. "The fact that its coming to Seattle puts it so close to all us,"Ramiel said.
She said the national organization has realized that its important to get civic leaders and senior city staff to attend their conventions. So it is providing discounts to entice city officials and Assembly members to attend. "Every time I see any of them, I ask them to please come because we can't do this without them. This is an entire city wide process to make this program work in Juneau."
A move is afoot for a pre or post conference trip to Juneau. When they were in Kansas city for the convention there last year, Ramiel said they said they detected a lot of interest in coming to Alaska and Juneau. Herndon said she reached out to Main Street America officials who thought that was a great suggestion. She said she's working with Alaska Airlines and Travel Juneau to see what arrangements for travel to Juneau and experiences in Juneau can be provided. "It's timely, because hopefully by that time, we'll be accredited," Herndon said.
Upwards of a 1,000 are expected to attend the national convention in Seattle. Ramiel said netting ten percent of that total to visit Juneau would be good.
