Juneau, Alaska (KINY) U.S. Attorneys do not plan to seek the death penalty in the case of a Utah woman killed on board a cruise ship near Juneau in July.
Kenneth Manzanares is charged with first degree murder for the death of his wife, Kristy on board the Princess Cruises ship on July 25th. Federal prosecutors had until this Wednesday to decide whether or not to seek the death penalty in the case. Manzanares pled not guilty to the charge at his arraignment.
The US Attorney has jurisdiction because the murder occurred in open waters. The couple had left Seattle two days earlier for a seven day, round trip cruise to Alaska. The alleged motive is the wife couldn't stop laughing at the defendant.
A trial date is not likely until 2018. Manzanares is due in court next week for a status hearing.
