Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The City and Borough of Juneau planning commission held a hearing on a seasonal business and discussed priorities for the near future at their regular meeting Tuesday.
The commission approved a conditional use permit for a seasonal vehicle rental business on South Franklin Street across from Taku Smokeries.
Senior planner for the CBJ Jill Maclean says some conditions were set on the operation. They include handicapped accessible parking. A seasonal hut building will be removed after season. Also an emergency evacuation and safety plan must be approved by police and fire annually for the property.
The fire department had some concerns about accessibility to the property should an emergency occur. The staff report said "The fire department does have a concern with accessibility to the parking lot. There are two main reasons. One is the fact that the staff could have a medical emergency and we need to get an ambulance up there. The second one is the fact that vehicles left out of sight could potentially be a target for vandalism including arson, which would be difficult at best for our apparatus to safely and adequately extinguish any fires."
The police department said they were concern about accessibility as well. The report said while the police did have some concerns, they are not sufficient to the point of stopping the project.
The business would cater to the nearby cruise ship dock. 15 jeeps would be rented daily. Inside would be a tablet with a program of maps and tourist sites and destinations so the visitor could tour the area by themselves.
The commission also discussed issues like parking, blocking, security, and other items.
The group also discussed a work plan for the future that includes discussions and work on urban agriculture and farm animals, tiny houses, a new zoning district to augment the Auke Bay plan, and a plan to add residential zoning districts downtown.
