CBJ issues an Air Emergency

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Open burning is prohibited in the borough until further notice.

The City and Borough of Juneau's Lands Division along with Capital City Fire Rescue issued an Air Emergency for the entire borough this morning.

This is due to unhealthy levels of air born particulates caused by regional forest fires.

The CBJ has canceled all open burn permits and prohibits all open burning.  The use of wood stoves and fire places are also prohibited.

CBJ officials said the particulate levels are expected to remain unhealthy for the next few days.  People with medical conditions or sensitivity to poor air quality should limit exposure and time spent outdoors until air quality improves.

CBJ officials plan to monitor the particulate levels and cancel the Air Emergency once the particulate levels return to healthy levels.

Residents can report open burns to CCFR at 586-0600.
