Anchorage, AK (AP) - An Anchorage woman has won the prestigious US Rhodes scholarship, which included 10 African Americans, the most ever in a single Rhodes class — as well as a transgender man and four students from colleges that had never had received the honor before.
Samantha M. Mack, the first winner from the University of Alaska Anchorage, is an Aleut woman who was born in a remote village before her parents brought her to Anchorage for better educational opportunities. She studies political theory from an indigenous and feminist perspective.
The scholarship will cover all of her expenses for two or three years of study starting next October. This is the first time a University of Alaska Anchorage student has won the scholarship.
