1,300 Bike Riders Expected in Annual Ride

Haines, Alaska (KINY) - The annual Kluane Chilkat bike ride is scheduled for this Saturday.

Organizer Rob Welton said one change this year is road construction with a couple miles from mile 10-12 on the Haines Highway. Construction will be suspended on Saturday. He said many bikers might want to use a heavier tire or use mountain bikes.

Welton said the ride is just for fun. "Its part of the summer for most people. You have the same team year after year. You meet friends, hang out and have a big party with music and a salmon feed. Its a great way to celebrate summer."

The event draws people from all over, but about one third are from Southeast Alaska. The course covers 148 miles; it also brings a huge economic impact to Haines and Haines Junction. Many businesses claim it is the busiest weekend they have all year.

It takes most teams about eight hours to finish the ride.
