Babbitt says feds won't budge on subsistence
Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt today warned state lawmakers to not misunderstand the federal government's position on subsistence. He told reporters this morning that the federal government would not extend a moratorium on a federal takeover of fishery management in December, and that a management system based on need would be contrary to the intent of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. Representative Scott Ogan said that he will continue to work for changes to the federal law, and that Babbitt's comments wouldn't change his course of action "one iota". Ogan last week tabled the proposal from Governor Knowles' task force on subsistence.
AIDEA to finalize Snettisham acquisition
Alaska Electric Light and Power will present the Snettisham Power Sales Agreement to the Assembly Committee of the Whole work session today. The agreement transfers ownership of the hydroelectric facility from the federal government to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, and allows for AEL&P to purchase power from the state. There is also a provision in the agreement that would allow AEL&P to purchase Snettisham from the state, provided it was in the best interest of the rate payers.

Also on the Assembly agenda is a resolution that supports plans by Goldbelt Incorporated to extend Veteran's Memorial Highway to Cascade Point.
Bizarre accident claims Juneau man
26 year old Craig Mockta died early Saturday after apparently attempting to break into his own home. Juneau Police say Mockta was locked out of his home, and broke a window. His girlfriend, who was asleep at the time, unlocked the door and returned to bed, only to be awakened the next morning by a phone call from Mockta's employer, stating he was missing. She found Mockta unresponsive in the bathroom, where Glacier Valley Fire Department personnel pronounced him dead. JPD says he apparently severed an artery when he broke the window, and bled to death.
