Skagway offers berth for Malaspina
The City of Skagway and the White Pass Railroad today offered to berth the state ferry Malispina free of charge during a proposed winter of 1998/99 lay up.  Mayor John Mielke (MILK-ee) says the offer was made to tie the Malaspina up at the new large cruise ship dock in Skagway to save the state an estimated $75-thousand a month.  Mielke says all of Southeast wants the Malispina to be used as a day boat, and winter lay up moorage could have been a hindrance to that service.  The offer was made to Ferry System Director Bob Doll, who was unavailable for comment today.

Haines on record against road project
Deficient funding for road maintenance and an unsafe ferry crossing are two reasons the Borough of Haines has gone on record against the proposed Juneau Access Project.   Borough Mayor Jerry Lapp says the project as it stands bypasses Haines and goes straight through sea-lion haul outs and slide areas.  Over 300 Haines residents signed the resolution before the Borough Assembly adopted it last month.  Lapp says he favors using the Malispina as a day boat, or resurrecting an old access project that had a road on the West side of Lynn Canal.

Settlement reached in McIntyre lawsuits
Two lawsuits stemming from the 1993 firing of former Juneau School District Superintendent Helen McIntyre have been settled.  According to City and Borough of Juneau Attorney John Corso, the city will be receiving $250-thousand from CNA Insurance, which represents Hedland, Fleishcer, Friedman, Brennan and Cooke, former attorneys for the city, and Robertson, Monagle and Eastaugh.  The parties met Thursday in Ketchikan, and Saturday in Juneau.  All parties involved agree to dismiss the lawsuit, and no party admitted fault or liability.

Goldbelt road comment period ends next week
Residents have until Monday to submit comments to the Forest Service regarding Goldbelt's proposed two and a half mile road to Cascade Point.  The land needed for the road is Forest Service land that crosses Goldbelt property.  After the comment deadline, comments will be reviewed and a draft environmental impact statement will be released, followed by the final E-I-S in March.

World Bank officials visit Capital City
Juneau residents will get a chance to talk with the U.S. Coordinator for External Affairs with the World Bank tonight.  John Donaldson will give a talk at 5 in the Diamond Courthouse, followed by a town meeting at the Assembly Chambers at 8.  Donaldson says he will discuss recent reforms in financing international development and the significance of development to the state of Alaska.
