*A grant of $200,000 was recently received by the Juneau Police Department. It came from the Community Oriented Policing Services division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and the focus of the grant is improved prosecution of domestic violence perpetrators. Captain Michael DeCapua says that as part of the grant, JPD will initiate the use of their Domestic Violence Service Team on Tuesday. The Team will arrest people who have failed to comply with domestic violence related court orders. DeCapua hopes the Team will hammer home the message that domestic violence perpetrators must comply with court orders and complete the terms of their sentences.
*Residents of Peterson Creek, along with members of environmental groups will be hiking the area that has been proposed as the site of a golf course on West Douglas. Randy Bayliss, project manager, says they will be taking interested individuals on a walk of the site tomorrow morning at 9, to show flagged areas, and the areas that would eventually become the fairway. Bayliss says the next step is putting together applications for federal, state, and local permits, that address any concerns that are raised by residents and the environmental community.
*Last night's Assembly Finance Committee meeting dealt with a review of the Docks and Harbor Board finances. The Board requested that revenues generated by the state Raw Fish Tax be funneled into the Docks Budget, along with funds raised by the lease of lands to the Mt. Robert's Tram. The request was approved by the Committee. Also approved last night was $50,000 to cover Juneau's part of a scoping survey of resolutions brought forward by the Southeast Mayor's Conference, dealing with regional transportation, an intertie plan, solid waste management, and an economic analysis.
*The University of Alaska Southeast will be the site of the 1998 convention of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration. Dr. Lawrence Lee Oldaker, chair of the education faculty at UAS extended the invitation to the NCPEA, and was able to put together an impressive package with the help of the Juneau Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and campus officials. UAS had been trying for two years to get the convention, and was finally successful with the package that stressed Alaska's attractions to the group.
*The third annual Lord Baranof Ball will be held tomorrow night at the Baranof Hotel, and organizers say they have well over 200 auction items, most donated by big name celebrities like Clint Eastwood, President Clinton, and John Travolta, that they hope will net them money to fund programs such as Meals on Wheels and Care-A-Van. The Ball is sponsored by Catholic Community Services.
