*The Mayor's Public Safety Building Task Force has received its first committee report with recommendations for a new police station. The Plan and Program committee is suggesting a 3-story facility downsized by 4,000 square feet to about 26,000 square feet. Other reductions from the Facility Needs Assessment conducted last summer include smaller offices, the elimination of a training room, and more common work spaces. The committee recommends a larger fire arms training simulator room, and 4 holding cells, each about 70 square feet in size. The recommendations go to the full task force next Thursday night.
*A Master Plan for development of West Douglas Island may include a proposal for an auto tunnel through the island. The suggestion came from a resident at a public meeting last week. A consultant working on the development plan says people giggled at first, but then took a more serious tone with the concept. The tunnel will now be included in at least the early stages of the plan.
*The C.B.J. has taken out an option on property for a new recycling center. At a meeting last night, the Assembly Committee of the Whole heard a report on general plans for building a household hazardous waste facility -- the recycling center would be constructed on 2 adjacent lots. The committee also looked over a report on the Dimond Park area. They will study whether that area may be a good place to build a second high school.
*It appears nobody's jumping at the chance to shape the course of the C.B.J. Parks and Recreation Department. For the first time in 20 years, the department is working on a new comprehensive plan. But, a public meeting held last night to discuss local residents' concerns about parks and recreation drew exactly 1 person, a man new to town. Parks and Rec has scheduled 3 more meetings next week and hopes to draw more of a crowd.
*Applications are now being accepted by the State Parks Division for the new cabin at Point Bridget north of Juneau. Written requests will be taken until February 1st at which time a drawing will be held to see who gets to rent the Blue Muscle Beach cabin when. After the 1st, the cabin will be available only on a first come, first served basis.
*The Anchorage Daily News is looking for someone to send to Juneau to watch the Legislature in action. The newspaper is holding a contest to select a person who will be flown to Juneau to meet with their delegation, and on return write an op-ed piece for the Daily News. All expenses are paid including air fare, lodging and meals.
