Knowles says state is "sound"
Governor Tony Knowles said last night that the state of the State of Alaska is sound, and he is pleased with the fact that over 84-hundred new jobs have been created in the state, helping to move thousands of Alaskans off the welfare rolls. Knowles also said that the mining and oil industries are being bright spots in Alaska's economy, but warned that upcoming budgets may have to be re-adjusted if oil prices continue dropping. Knowles also pushed his Smart Start program, which would put more money into youth health programs.
Vezey is a minority of one
It appears as if the Republican led Majority is short one person. Representative Al Vezey didn't make any friends last session when he didn't vote on the budget, saying the cuts weren't deep enough. Vezey says he was kicked out of the Majority Caucus, but leaders today told him he could rejoin, if he promised to vote for the budget. Vezey said he's not willing to do that, and House Majority Leader Brian Porter said today that Vezey wouldn't be attending caucus meetings, and that the split was Vezey's choice.
JPD hunts for armed robber
Juneau Police are looking for a man who robbed the Breakwater Inn at gunpoint early this morning. Captain Michael DeCapua says the night clerk notified them just after 3:30 this morning that a man of average height and build, wearing a ski mask entered the lobby, and threatened the clerk with a handgun, demanding money. The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, and the suspect then fled on foot. The investigation is continuing, and DeCapua asks anyone with information to contact JPD immediately.
MacKinnon gets easement nod from CBJ planners
The Planning Commission last night recommended to the Assembly that City Manager Dave Palmer begin negotiations to trade about 30 acres of land in Lemon Creek, behind Costco. The Commission also recommended the Assembly grant an easement across CBJ land at the end of Evergreen Avenue to Deputy Mayor John MacKinnon for the purpose of building driveways and putting in utilities for two single family homes being built there. The easement is contingent on MacKinnon getting permits and having a soil stability analysis done.
