Majority re-files subsistence litigation
A lawsuit seeking to block a federal takeover of subsistence fishing in Alaska that was dropped three years ago by the Knowles administration has found new life. The Legislative Council and several members of the Legislative Majority filed the lawsuit yesterday, just hours before the Alaska Legislature reconvened. Representative Ramona Barnes says the suit is meant to protect the rights of the state under the statehood compact and the Alaska Constitution. Attorney General Bruce Bothelo says the suit has little chance of success.
CBJ amends salmon resolution
Following the release of a report by William Ruckleshaus and David Stangway, envoys for the U.S. and Canada, respectively, in the Pacific Salmon Dispute, the CBJ Assembly was forced to amend a resolution passed unanimously last night. The resolution supports the stakeholder process in bringing the dispute to an end, but the envoys are now calling for an end to the stakeholder process, and for both sides to negotiate a two year agreement. The CBJ resolution states that the U.S. and Canada should maintain the stakeholder process.
AP&T cable project open for comment
With Alaska Power and Telephone making plans to put in a submarine cable from Skagway to Haines to connect the two towns to a power grid, the Juneau Ranger District is seeking public comments on a plan to construct a cable splice vault on National Forest Service land near Kasidaya (CASS-uh-DAY-uh) Creek. Comments will be accepted until February 9.
Youths sought in attempted car break-in
Juneau Police are on the lookout for two juveniles who were observed trying to break into a car on Aspen Street shortly after 2 this morning. The suspects are described as wearing black warm up style jackets and black knit watch caps. Anyone with information is asked to contact JPD.
Cops involved in car chase early today
19 year old Timothy C. Drake was arrested just after 5 this morning after JPD observed a vehicle being driven erratically near Thunder Mountain Road. Drake attempted to elude officers by driving at high speeds without headlights. Drake was contacted at his residence and charged with driving while his license was revoked, two counts of reckless endangerment and failure to stop for police.
State building may get new name
Renaming the Bank of America Building in Anchorage was the subject of a bill filed by the Senate Rules Committee yesterday. The bill seeks to rename the building, purchased last year to house state offices, to honor former Anchorage Times publisher Robert Atwood, who passed away last year.
