   Residents "out the road" affected
About 500 Alaska, Electric, Light and Power customers from Mile 18 north to the end of the road were without power today. The outage occurred at about 5:30 this morning when a tree fell severing a pole and knocking down lines. The line is along the beach making repair work, which was expected to take all day, more difficult. Heavy snow also contributed to trees falling into lines Sunday. Lena Loop residents were without power along with a number of individual home owners in other locations in the area. Meanwhile, A-E-L and P has concluded that Friday's areawide power outage was caused when two lines along Back Loop Road made contact with one another. That caused the line from Snettisham to go down.

School bus service for elementary students in the Lena Loop area was CBJ equipment shoving snow into Gastineau Channelcancelled today when a state snow removal truck got stuck and blocked the roadway. Bob Martin, Southeast Regional Director for state D-O-T, says the truck was attempting to widen the road when he got stuck. Another truck responded to the scene to pull it out. Meanwhile, both city and state crews continue mopping up snow from the almost two-feet which has fallen since last week. The CBJ is dumping collected snow in Gastineau Channel at its downtown location near the Douglas Bridge (left).
Juneau Police report up to ten vehicles went in the ditch along Egan between the Hospital intersection and beyond Fred Meyer last this morning. Police attribute the rash of accidents to drivers traveling too fast for road conditions.

A measure that proposes moving legislative sessions to the new state office building in Anchorage has been thrown into the legislative hopper. House Bill 26, sponsored by Wasilla Representative Vic Kohring (right), showed up in the list released Friday of the measures pre-filed in advance of the First Session of the 21st Alaska Legislature. A similar measure was bottled up in committee during the last Legislature. Juneau Representative Bill Hudson said on KINY's Capital Chat today that he doesn't believe the measure will gain broad support.

A measure requiring lawmakers to honor all terms of a collective bargaining agreement, including conditions in subsequent years, will be introduced by Juneau Representative Bill Hudson (left) in the upcoming session. Problems in the past is spurring Hudson to introduce the bill. Although one legislature can not bind another, Hudson feels it can provide state employees some assurances in the future that the entire life of their contracts will be honored.

A man is in jail after he allegedly attempted to rob the manager of the Glacier Cinema at gunpoint over the weekend. Police received the call at 12:01 Sunday morning. The manager told police the suspect said he had a gun and demanded money, but became frightened and ran away while he was waiting for him to get the cash. 27 year Michael Lorin Cox was spotted by members of the Juneau Citizens Patrol changing clothes in a wooded area near Duck Creek Market. Police caught up to him at a Kodzoff trailer home at 2:20. He was charged with Robbery in the First Degree for his actions at Glacier Cinema and Theft in the Second Degree in connection with another case.

The proposed contract award to Nuna Contractors of Anchorage for construction of the new police station is on tonight's agenda of the Juneau Assembly. Two ordinances held over from last week's meeting are also up for action. They increase sewer service rates and amend the land use code to allow junk yards in the waterfront industrial zone. The Assembly will entertain a request to waive the fees at Centennial Hall for the Governor's Inaugural Ball scheduled for January 23rd. During a special meeting beginning at five, the panel takes up an appeal of a Planning Commission decision that denied construction of a 12 unit apartment building and related parking on Gastineau Avenue.

The Juneau School District plans to start the recruitment for new teachers later this month in an effort to fill those positions becoming vacant as the result of early retirements. School District Superintendent Mary Rubadeau says they have focused on in-district transfers to this point as current employees put in for the positions that will come open. Advertising for administrative positions coming vacant was commenced in November. The superintendent says plans call for screening the applications next month and conducting interviews in March. A total of 57 employees in teaching, administrative and classified positions opted to retire early during the application period last year.

A salvage vessel has corralled a tugboat that drifted near Yakutat for 16 hours after the Coast Guard evacuated the seven-man crew from the burning tug. the Coast Guard says the errant tugboat was taken in tow about 4 o-clock yesterday afternoon.

The Ketchikan Campus of the University of Alaska Southeast has its first student housing. Ketchikan Housing Incorporated recently bought a two bedroom apartment which is designed to provide low income housing for four University students.

The Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reached a landmark in 19-98 -- a record number of ambulance calls. On the last day of December, the department recorded its one thousandth call of the year. The previous record of 925 ambulance calls was set in 19-97.

The Juneau Douglas Crimson Bear's men's basketball squad swept Dimond High over the weekend. The bears downed the Lynx yesterday afternoon 79 to 51 and 64 to 53 Saturday night. The women split with West. They were victorious yesterday 67 to 30 while losing Saturday 55 to 40. Homecoming ceremonies were delayed until Saturday since the Anchorage teams couldn't reach Juneau because of Friday's snowfall.

There could be a lot of people named Juneau running around the capital city this summer. At least 50 and perhaps as many as one hundred descendants of Joe Juneau plan to visit the city named for him around the Fourth of July.
