FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE JUNEAU DAILY NEWS

1. WHAT IS THE JUNEAU DAILY NEWS?

First and foremost, this daily publication is intended to bring local Juneau and Southeast Alaska news to you quickly in a concise and easy-to-read format. The stories are written by the KINY Radio News Department staff under the guidance of News Director Pete Carran.

2. HOW ARE PRIORITIES CHOSEN FOR STORIES THAT APPEAR IN THE JUNEAU DAILY NEWS?

Each article, though short, attempts to present the core of the story in an unbiased manner. You will find local stories here that appear nowhere else, covering a wide range of "news you can use." The articles are stacked in descending order according to standard news priorities, i.e., timeliness, impact and the number of readers directly affected.

3. HOW DOES THE JUNEAU DAILY NEWS DIFFER FROM TRADITIONAL NEWSPAPERS?

Regular readers of the Juneau Daily News will note that in many instances, one angle or view is presented in a story one day, a balancing opinion the next. This may be new to you, but it can be quite effective in properly covering an issue. An example would be a decision on timber sales in the Tongass. The first day you would find the announcement of the decision by, let's say, the U.S. Forest Service. The next day the story may contain the response of the timber industry, and the day after that the opinion of a conservation group. Unlike traditional newspaper articles where many views are expressed in a single article, the Juneau Daily News contains what's referred to in the news business as "running stories." This concept allows many more stories to be posted each day, and allows you to get in, get updated, and get out quickly.

4. WHEN IS THE LATEST EDITION OF THE JUNEAU DAILY NEWS POSTED?

As news happens; that's how we could best describe the term "latest edition." Because our news stories are never on paper, updates are made quite frequently through the day and evening. We generally close out "today's edition" around midnight, but then post the first version of the new day's events (including things that happen overnight and in the morning). Here's how the system works. The Latest Edition is posted regularly throughout every weekday, Monday through Friday. In the case of major events, this version is updated on weekends, too. Each final edition is then available by individual day under The Week in Juneau for seven days before being archived in Search the Online Archives. The archives are searchable by date or keywords using boolean (and/or/not) refinements.
